October's Big Ideas

Big Ideas In Our Learning For This Month…

Reading – We are learning to be meaning makers by determining and summarizing important ideas with supporting details in a variety of texts.


Writing – We are learning to generate ideas about a topic and order main ideas and supporting details that could be used to develop a summary using graphic organizers.

Oral – We are learning to listen to understand and respond appropriately in a variety of situations for a variety of purposes.


Media – We are learning to understand a variety of media texts and how media forms create meaning.

Math – We are learning to read, represent, compare, and order whole numbers to 10 000, decimal numbers to tenths. We are learning to solve problems involving the addition, subtraction.


Science- We are learning to investigate and understand the specific characteristics and properties of light and sound.


Social Studies – We are learning to compare and contrast ancient civilizations of the past with present day Canadian Society.

Arts – We are learning to use the elements and principles of design to create two-dimensional pieces of artwork.

Health – We are learning to identify risks associated with communications technology and describe precautions and strategies for using these technologies safely.

October Updates / Important Class Information

Class Information

Agendas- Please make sure that you are checking and signing the agenda each night.  The agenda is my way to communicate with you about what is happening in our class and school.  Students write in their agenda everyday. If you do write me a note, please remind your child to show me the note at the beginning of the day.  

Homework – Students are expected to read at least 30 minutes each night. Students are to record their home reading in their weekly reading logs found in their homework folders. After reading, please spend a couple of minutes with your child discussing what they have read.  Discussing the text after reading will help your child understand what they have read. Please initial after your child has read every night. In addition, Math and or Language practice for the week will be sent home every Monday and is to be completed by the following Monday and sent back to school.  Homework will be checked for completion purposes, which contributes to learning skills.

Class Blog – I have been updating our class blog with snapshots of our learning in class. I also post weekly homework on the blog, as well as resources that you can use to help your child with homework and review skills learned in school. Please be sure to check the class blog or sign up for email updates to stay informed!

Welcome to October!

Dear Families,

September has come to an end and I can hardly believe that a month of school has already past! September has been a very busy month! As a class, we have been working on getting back into routine and working really hard in our studies.

It has been a pleasure of mine to get to know your child and work with each and every one of them! It is shaping up to be a great year!

In this class update newsletter, you will find important information about our class and the big ideas in our learning for weeks coming.

Terry Fox Walk

Terry Fox Walk will be taking place Wednesday, September 24th in the afternoon. Please remember to send your child to school with active wear, a hat and a water bottle! Can't wait for our panthers to unite and walk for a great cause!

For math home connection, ask your child to show you the many ways numbers can be represented!

Homework Folders

Homework for the week will be given out every Monday. Homework folders are to come back to school with your child and completed homework the following Monday. Should additional practice be handed out during the week, your child will bring it home through their communication folders and should be filed into their homework folders. Homework will be checked for completion purposes. Thank you for your support.
