Northern lights

We are learning about Northern Lights and how it is part of the Yukon climate and culture. Stay tuned for our artwork in famous Canadian Ted Harrison's style! Check out how we represented the northern lights on a paper after watching a video capture of the amazing light show online.

Parent Student Teacher Conference Night - Thank You!

I wanted to send out a big thank you to all families and students who participated in parent-student-teacher conference night! I am a huge believer of a strong partnership between home and school in student achievement and success. As always if you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact me at the school. 

November Class Information Updates

Class Information

Cold Weather- Please make sure your child remembers to dress warmly for outdoor recess time. As wet weather approaches, your child is encouraged to bring a pair of indoor shoes to wear in the school and change out of them during recess time. Having an extra change of clothes in his/her backpack is also encouraged for the wet weather season. 

Agendas- Please make sure that you are checking and signing the agenda each night.  The agenda is my way to communicate with you about what is happening in our class and school.  Students write in their agenda everyday. If you do write me a note, please remind your child to show me the note at the beginning of the day.  

Homework – Students are expected to read at least 30 minutes each night. Students are to record their home reading in their weekly reading logs found in their homework folders. After reading, please spend a couple of minutes with your child discussing what they have read.  Discussing the text after reading will help your child understand what they have read. Please initial after your child has read every night. In addition, Math and or Language practice for the week will be sent home every Monday and is to be completed by the following Monday and sent back to school.  Homework will be checked for completion purposes, which contributes to learning skills.

Class Blog – I have been updating our class blog with snapshots of our learning in class. I also post weekly homework on the blog, as well as resources that you can use to help your child with homework and review skills learned in school. Please be sure to check the class blog or sign up for email updates to stay informed!

We Remember

This week we have had great discussion and conversation about Remembrance Day and the importance of being peacemakers in our everyday lives. Invite your child to share with you what they have learned in class. We participated in a memorial assembly for Remembrance day today and presented our wreath.

Best Part of Me




Students wrote a paragraph about the best part of them and it is now part of our class book! We will be sharing our class book to fellow students at PBPS asking them.... "What is the best part of you?" Great work Chung Stars!!


What Does Data Management Mean To You?


We are learning to collect, analyze, and display data. We wrote our own definition about what data management means to us.

Home Connection: Discuss with your child how data management is used in our daily lives. (i.e graphs, tables, charts). How does displaying data in different ways help us read information?

4) Conduct Interview with Family Member - Due Monday November 10th (Students came up with 10 questions to interview a family member at home they want to get to know. They are to conduct the interview and record their responses. The interview and responses are to be completed and submitted on Monday November 10th)


November Big Ideas

Big Ideas In Our Learning For This Month…

Reading – We are learning to be meaning makers by summarizing important ideas with supporting details in a variety of texts. We are also learning to ask questions and engage with texts.

Writing – We are learning to generate many supporting details to explain our main ideas. We are learning to choose the strongest pieces of supporting details to explain our ideas clearly. We are continuing to use graphic organizers to help us brainstorm and plan our ideas when writing a paragraph.

Oral – We are learning to listen to understand and respond appropriately in a variety of situations for a variety of purposes.

Media –
We are learning to understand a variety of media texts and how media forms create meaning.

Math – We are learning to collect and organize primary data and display the data using charts and graphs, including stem and leaf plots and double bar graphs. We are learning to describe and interpret primary data and secondary data presented in charts and graphs.

Science- We are learning to investigate and understand the specific characteristics and properties of light and sound. We will be starting Rocks and Minerals unit late November. 

Social Studies – We are learning to compare and contrast ancient civilizations of the past with present day Canadian Society.
Arts –We are learning about Ted Harrison and his impact to Canadian Art History. We are learning how to determine “artistic style” in an art piece using critical thinking skills.


Health – We are learning to identify risks associated with communications technology and describe precautions and strategies for using these technologies safely.

Monthly Message - Happy November!

Dear Families,

As October comes to an end, students have become experts in establishing routines for our learning and classroom!

It was so nice to meet families on curriculum night and I look forward to meeting everyone again during Parent/Student/Teacher Conferences. Students are encouraged to attend conference night along with you, to discuss their progress, goals and learning.

In this class update newsletter, you will find important information about our class and the big ideas in our learning for weeks coming.
