January Big Ideas...
Reading – We are learning to be
meaning makers by summarizing important ideas with supporting details in a
variety of texts. We are learning to
engage with the texts we read by synthesizing what we read. We are also
learning to be text analyzers by looking at how texts we read, can change the
way we think about certain issues and topics.
Writing – We are learning to
generate many strong supporting details to explain our main ideas. We are
learning to use interesting sentences and word choice in our writing pieces. We
are learning to add voice to our writing to match the purpose and audience of
our writing pieces.
Oral – We are learning to listen
to understand and respond appropriately in a variety of situations for a
variety of purposes.
Media – We are learning to understand the features of a variety of media texts. We are learning to identify the purpose, audience and messages media forms convey. We will critically look at features of an advertisement and create our advertisements for the e-books we created on Storybird.
Math – We are learning to solve
problems involving multiplication and division. We will move to patterning and
algebra by mid to end of January.
Science- We are learning the unique
characteristics and properties of rocks as a result of how they were formed. We
are learning how their properties determine how we use rocks in our society.
Social Studies – We are learning to compare and contrast ancient civilizations of the past with present day Canadian Society. We will begin our new unit in social studies by mid to end January.
Arts –We are learning to use
elements of Drama by writing in role.
Health – We are learning to make
healthy and informative decisions regarding bullying issues.
Welcome to January 2015!
Dear
Families,
Happy
New Year! I hope all families had a restful and relaxing winter break.
With
the arrival of 2015, students have been reflecting on the goals we set for
ourselves in the Fall term. Students have been reflecting on their progress and
success and have set new goals for the rest of the winter term. I invite you to
ask your child to share the goals/ resolutions they set for themselves and
discuss strategies/ways their goals can be supported at home.
In
this class update newsletter, you will find important information about our
class and the big ideas in our learning for weeks coming.
If
you any questions/concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me at the school
or write me a note in your child’s agenda !
Happy
January,
Ms.
Chung J
