Hour of Code
This past week, we participated in the "Hour of Code". Here is a launch video we watched! Students were excited and engaged as we spent 1 hour coding. We learned the importance of using our critical thinking and planning skills when coding. Ask your child to tell you more about what they learned from this special event.

Class Information
December Big Idea's
Reading – We are learning to be
meaning makers by summarizing important ideas with supporting details in a
variety of texts. We are also
learning to determine the most important ideas and explaining our thinking clearly
in our summaries. We are learning to engage with the texts we read by
synthesizing what we read before, during and after reading a variety of texts.
Writing – We are learning to
generate many strong supporting details to explain our main ideas. We are
learning to choose the strongest pieces of supporting details to explain our
ideas clearly. We are continuing to use graphic organizers to help us
brainstorm and plan our ideas when writing a summary paragraph.
Oral – We are learning to listen
to understand and respond appropriately in a variety of situations for a
variety of purposes.
Media – We are learning to understand the features of a variety of media texts. We are learning to identify the purpose, audience and messages media forms convey. We have been exploring a Web 2.0 tool called storybird.com to create our very own storybooks.
Math – We are learning to identify
and describe attributes of polygons. We are learning to classify quadrilaterals
and angles.
Science- We are learning the unique
characteristics and properties of rocks as a result of how they were formed. We
are learning how their properties determine how we use rocks in our society.
Social Studies – We are learning to compare
and contrast ancient civilizations of the past with present day Canadian
Society.
Arts –We are learning about Ted Harrison
and his impact to Canadian Art History. We
are learning how to determine “artistic style” in an art piece using critical
thinking skills.
Health – We are learning to
identify risks associated with communications technology and describe precautions
and strategies for using these technologies safely.

Monthly Message - Welcome to December!
Dear
Families,
Welcome
to December! November was a busy month for our class. Remembrance day became a
critical point to guide our learning for the past couple of weeks. Students have
been highly interested in learning about current events and how we can be
peacemakers in our society and in our own lives.
Thank
you to all families who attended parent/student/teacher conferences. It was my
pleasure to discuss your child’s progress and learning with you.
Winter
break is fast approaching! I wish all families a happy and safe winter break!
In
this class update newsletter, you will find important information about our
class and the big ideas in our learning for weeks coming.
If
you any questions/concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me at the school
or write me a note in your child’s agenda !
Happy
December,
Ms.
